They spot every plot twist by chapter two but missed that the science test is Friday. Crack the Case: a detective test prep printable that turns studying into a case.

Sound Familiar?

“I studied!” (They read their notes once. On the couch. With a video on.)

The test was “a surprise.” It was on the board for two weeks.

They knew it last night. Then they blanked.

Good news: your kid already thinks like a detective. A hunch isn’t proof until you test it. This workbook points that noticing brain at one test.

How The Case Works

📁 Open the Case: pick a route by days left. Full Case (5+ days), Hot Pursuit (2–4 days) or Urgent! (tomorrow: one page, about 90 minutes).

📁 Gather the Evidence and Size Up the Case: study guide, old quizzes, the paper trail. List 4 to 8 leads (topics).

📁 Facts or Hunches: notes closed, one real question per lead. Rate each one SOLVED, WARM or COLD. “I think I know it” is a hunch.

Priority Leads: COLD leads the test will definitely cover go first.

Follow-Up Days: leads go cold, so each target gets visited on 2+ different days. Short visits beat an all-night stakeout.

The Field Kit: match the evidence to a tool, like Quick ID flashcards, The Timeline, Sketch the Scene or a Case Outline for essays. Rereading and highlighting get filed under False leads.

Interview Cards and the Interview Log: fold-over question cards, then file closed, answer, check. +1 for every try, solved or not. A lead is CLOSED when it’s solved on 2 different days.

Wrong Turns: every miss gets traced to one of five causes, a fix and a recheck day.

Full Walk-Through: a mixed, timed practice test with a Proof it worked box.

Test-day and after-test pages, plus a one-page guide for you.

Why It Works

Quizzing yourself from memory and spreading practice over several days are two of the best-supported study methods in learning research. Rereading feels like work but never asks a question. The case language makes the better methods feel like detective work, not homework.

Designed with ADHD and easily distracted kids in mind: one job per page, sessions of 3 to 20 minutes, a “Done when” line on every page, no streaks to break. Missed a day? Cases stay open.

How It Arrives

1 PDF, 16 pages, US Letter. Instant digital download: no physical item ships. Black-and-white friendly, print at home. Print only your kid’s route. Grades 5 to 9.

FAQ

Q: Will my 13-year-old call it babyish?

A: No mascots, no stickers. It reads like a case file: typewriter headings, clean pages, real decisions.

Q: Is there any crime stuff in it?

A: None. No crime scenes, nothing scary. The mystery is the test, and the reveal is test day.

Q: The test is tomorrow. Too late?

A: Use the Urgent! page: about 90 minutes of real work, in order, then sleep.

Q: Which subjects?

A: Any test with topics: science, history, vocab, math. Your kid fills in the leads.

Questions parents ask

What ages and grades is this for?
Ages 11 to 14 is the sweet spot (grades 5 to 9). The tone is grown-up, with no cartoon mascots, so a 13-year-old won’t feel babied.

Is it good for kids with ADHD?
It was designed with distractible kids and kids with ADHD in mind: one job per page, a short DO THIS line, short sessions, a clear next step and nothing that resets after a missed day. It is a study tool, not a treatment.

The test is tomorrow. Is it too late?
No. There is a one-page plan for the night before, about 90 minutes, in order.

Does my kid have to love detective mystery things?
It helps. The whole system speaks the language of mystery books, puzzles, clues and solving cases. If that’s not your kid, the same system comes in 10 other worlds with matching page numbers.

Can I use it for homeschool or my classroom?
Yes. The license covers one household, or one teacher’s own students. Reprint it for every test this year.
