A test prep planner for the band, choir or orchestra kid who will drill eight hard bars until they’re clean, then “study” for a test by glancing at their notes.
Sound Familiar?
- They can name the exact measure where the altos keep rushing.
- They “forgot” the science test. It’s the same week as the concert.
- “I studied!” means they looked at the notes once, on the bus.
Here’s the good news: your kid already knows how to practice. Concert Night points that skill at a test.
How It Works In Their World
The test is the concert. The topics are the pieces on the program.
- Concert Countdown: pick a route by days left. Full Practice (5+ days), Double Time (2-4 days) or Sub Call (tomorrow, about 90 minutes).
- Play It Cold: no notes, no warm-up. One question per piece, rated CLEAN, SHAKY or NOT YET. It always sounds fine in your head; this is where they hear what’s really there.
- Not From the Top: the line every director repeats. Start with the NOT YET pieces most likely to be on the test.
- Practice Log: +1 for every time through, clean or not. A piece is LOCKED IN when it’s right on 2 different days.
- Pencil Marks: every miss gets marked, sorted into 5 causes, and given a fix. Marks aren’t failure. They’re a to-do list.
- Mock Audition: mixed order, timed, no stopping. Then the Proof it worked box puts their Play It Cold count next to their Mock Audition count.
That box is for you. The page says it plainly: show this to whoever keeps asking “did you study?”
WHAT’S INSIDE (16 pages)
Concert Countdown, Pack Your Folder, Read the Program, Play It Cold, Not From the Top, Practice Calendar, Practice Tools, Call & Response fold-over cards, Practice Log, Pencil Marks, Mock Audition, Concert Day, After the Concert, Sub Call (test is tomorrow) and a one-page guide for the adult helping.
Why It Works
Answering from memory, spreading practice over several days, and mixed timed practice are well-supported study methods in learning research. Rereading gets its real name: noodling. No grade promises, just steps and proof they can see.
Designed with ADHD and easily distracted kids in mind: one job per page, a short DO THIS line, 15-30 minute sessions, no streaks to break. Missed a day? Don’t take it from the top. Pick up at the first empty circle.
How It Arrives
Instant digital download: 1 PDF, US Letter, black-and-white friendly. No physical item ships. Print at home, and only the pages their route needs. Pages 9-11 are reusable, so print extras.
FAQ
Does my kid need to be a music whiz? No. It works for any test in any subject. Music is just the language.
Choir, not band? Fits. Singers and players both know programs, pencil marks and auditions.
Concert tonight, test tomorrow? Sub Call: one page, about 90 minutes. Then sleep.
Is this made for ADHD? It’s designed with ADHD and easily distracted kids in mind. It’s a study tool, not a medical product.

Questions parents ask
What ages and grades is this for?
Ages 11 to 14 is the sweet spot (grades 5 to 9). The tone is grown-up, with no cartoon mascots, so a 13-year-old won’t feel babied.
Is it good for kids with ADHD?
It was designed with distractible kids and kids with ADHD in mind: one job per page, a short DO THIS line, short sessions, a clear next step and nothing that resets after a missed day. It is a study tool, not a treatment.
The test is tomorrow. Is it too late?
No. There is a one-page plan for the night before, about 90 minutes, in order.
Does my kid have to love music things?
It helps. The whole system speaks the language of band, orchestra, choir, lessons and concerts. If that’s not your kid, the same system comes in 10 other worlds with matching page numbers.
Can I use it for homeschool or my classroom?
Yes. The license covers one household, or one teacher’s own students. Reprint it for every test this year.
